Better Than “Bridgerton”?: You Absolutely Have to Watch These 2 Great Series — But Not on Netflix
If you absolutely loved Bridgerton and are eager to dive into more swoon-worthy shows that are reminiscent of the Regency romp, then have no fear! There are two great shows streaming now that will make you super happy and fill your period drama itch.
One of my biggest complaints about period dramas (or at least my complaint) is about how dark they are.
In an effort to be realistic, many shows portray the dark side of their times- often with many violent war and torture scenes (yes- I am looking at you, Outlander, and Reign).
One of the reasons why I love Bridgerton is because of how light it is. We gloss over the dark parts of society, and those that they do touch on are treated with a lightness that still allows for a lot of escapism. There are no nightmares for these fans.
Good thing there are two other shows with the same idea- and with the gorgeous period costumes and locations to boot.
The only problem? You’ll have to spring for a new streaming service.
The Buccaneers
The Buccaneers is streaming on Apple TV and it’s Apple’s bid to join to the Bridgerton phenomenon. It’s a modern take on an old story.
Apple TV’s newest period drama sucks you into the drama as we follow American girls who head to England to find husbands. This show is based on a novel by the same name, Edith Wharton, but it deviates quite strongly from the book. It’s basically the marriage mart, but a few years later when the Americans come to call.
It’s fun, it’s modern, the music is familiar, and the stories are great. If you are a period drama purist then this show is not for you. But if you love the vibe, then grab a snack and come watch!
The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age keeps to its historical roots a bit more. It’s not a modern take, but the brightness and setting of New York gives it a fresh spin.
By the creator of Downton Abbey comes the story of The Gilded Age in America. The Gilded Age was a time of significant economic change, great fortunes being made and lost, and new and old money learning to live together. Marian Brook moves from rural Pennsylvania to New York, only to become involved in a social war between her family and their neighbors.
The costumes are absolutely fabulous, and the stories are engaging and, of course, swoon-worthy.
The Gilded Age is available from HBO so you can watch it with a subscription to Max.
